Here's what others remember about Velvet Freeze

I would go to the Lemay one with my cousins who lived on W. Arlee. They went to St. Andrews. We skated at Downs Roller Rink. My aunt worked at Stoessel Department store. Mmm Velvet Freeze.

As a child my aunt and uncle would take me to the Velvet Freeze on Gravois. We did not call it Velvet Freeze though, we called it "The big cone" because of the big cone that was on the parking lot. I always got the same thing, one scoop of lime sherbet and one scoop of orange sherbet. Little did I know that years later the Velvet Freeze in Baden would be my first job when I turned 16. I worked there till I became the assistant manager of the Hazelwood Store, and then the manager of the Bridgeton store. Two years later I became the district manager for the North end stores. In 1983 I quit this job to own the store in Belleville. In all I was involved with Velvet Freeze for over 13 years and 4 sets of owners.

My mom worked at the Velvet Freeze on W. Florissant (between Charlie Chicken and Steak-n-Shake) for around 15 or 20 years. Her and Toni (manager) worked side by side for several years. Me, my brother and my older sister worked there during our high school years. There were lots of ladies I remember like Maureen, Monica, Mary Jane, Laurie to name a few. They had the best ice cream and hot fudge. Mr. Pepper owned the store for years, and he was nicest guy. Our sweet momma (Shirley) lived to be 90 years old, and she just passed away on Veterans Day last year.

I grew up on Ridgecrest Dr in Arnold, MO. The Velvet Freeze was a block from our street. As a child I would always get the bubble gum ice cream, but as I grew up, I discovered my all time favorite, Gold Coast Chocolate! Our bus stop at the top of Ridgecrest Dr., by the post office was a block from the Velvet Freeze and we would walk there almost every day after school for a cone. After I moved to Overland in the early 90's, I would have my husband take me to the store on North Lindbergh for my Gold Coast ice cream and buy a it by the quart. If there is one ice cream that I truly miss and will never forget, it's the Gold Coast Chocolate ice cream from Velvet Freeze.

There was a small Velvet Freeze on Gravois, down the street from Skateland. I'd go there every Friday and order a vanilla malt with extra malt, marshmallow, and raw egg. My treat before going skating. It cost twenty five cents, 1965.

Mike's first job was at the Velvet Freeze on Big Bend in Maplewood. He remembers that you could get 5 scoops in a cone for only 25 cents.

I worked at the Velvet Freeze in Belleville when I was 16. Vanilla was the choice of most customers. I remember a regular customer who came in every day and ordered a triple banana split. I had to construct them on a big platter. I loved my first job there, but digging out the rock-hard ice cream with a spatula sure developed some good arm muscles.

Maggie remembers her neighborhood Velvet Freeze being the first place she and her best friend Molly were allowed to go without their parents. In the summers, they would run down the street to the ice cream shop, giggling the whole way. Her favorite flavor has always been praline with hot fudge.
